Wellplace Zoo was situated near Ipsden in Oxfordshire and opened its doors in April 1968. The owners announced the decision to close in 2006 and finally closed its doors on 10.09.2006. The following statement was displayed at the zoo entrance during the final season:
Closure of Wellplace Zoo, Ipsden, South Oxfordshire
Wellplace Zoo has operated as a local tourist attraction for over 37 years opening its gates to the public in 1968.
It is with regret that this will be the last year of our operation as we will shortly be retiring.
The last day of opening will be Sunday 10th September 2006.
Our aim when we first started business was to provide an enjoyable and valuable education experience at affordable prices.
Over the years we have established ourselves as a place families can enjoy and relax with their children and we have met many customers who have subsequently become our friends.
In more recent times our Christmas Santa Specials in December have become very popular as a more old-fashioned experience of Christmas
We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff who have looked after our animals, the local community for their on-going support and all of the customers who have visited us over the years.
The birds and animals have always been regarded by us as an extended family. We will be keeping some as pets and will ensure the remainder are re-housed to good homes once we cease to operate as a business.
Thanks again for all your support.
Hazel Holtom and family
